November 8, 2017 – Nazaré, Portugal
Professional Big Wave Surfer, Andrew Cotton (UK), suffered a horrific wipeout during a Big Wave Session in Praia do Norte in Portugal, and was taken to the Hospital, after hurting his back. This exclusive footage shows the wave and the moment Cotton is catapulted into the air, and the all aftermath until he is moved to the Ambulance.
Cotton caught a monster wave, and successfully rode it till the end. When the wave closed out, Cotton jumped from his board and was then projected into the air several meters high by the huge white water explosion. After the huge wipeout and after being held down underwater for many seconds, Cotton was hit by another wave on the head before being rescued by his partner professional Big Wave Surfer, Hugo Vau. During the rescue operation, the jetski was flipped by another wave, and both Cotton and Vau had to swim to the beach.
A Medical Team on site promptly attended Andrew Cotton soon as he got to the beach. At this moment cotty was with pain on his back, so they immobilised him as a precautionary measure. He was then taken by Ambulance a few minutes later to the Hospital.
According to filmmaker Pedro Miranda who shot this video, “he broke his back but is stable and recovering good and has no further damage, except being away from the water for maybe 3 months. We all wish him the best and a fast recovery, this was by far the gnarliest wipeout of the Season, stoked that Cotty is recovering”, the filmer said.
Also, Cotton posted a little update from his hospital bed later at night: “Thanks to everyone who helped this morning,” he said. “Everyone was really calm, you guys really saved my back, which unfortunately is broken but definitely could be worse, so thank you.”
Andrew Cotton is Britain’s most notorious Big Wave Surfer, one of Nazaré’s first pioneers along with his team mate Garrett McNamara. Cotton has been consistently surfing giant waves in Nazaré since the beginning 6-7 years ago and was previously nominated for the WSL Big Wave Awards with a wave caught in Nazaré.

Ladies and gentlemen – your XXXL Wipeout of the Year.
Cotty you're a legend, get well soon bud! Sending good vibes from Santa Barbara, CA.
Double brain fade. First Cotton for fading, crazy and dumb. The Jet Ski for turning back into the wave instead of going straight to the beach. Double brain fade
Hi, what I don't understand is; why did the jet ski turn around instead of keep going full speed towards the beach, I don't get what was the pilot trying to accomplish, by turning around charging the the wave coming behind them, he already had the surfer on board, anyone?
Why did you sensor the audio? Those beeps are so annoying. Also it's not in English, so very few people will understand it anyways…
That is one Badass bounce eh! I just can’t stop laughing in total amazement! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Great camera work, Andrew. I hope the guys from Metro pay what they stole. Do you know if Andrew used the buyoncy emergency system?
0:22 weeeeeeee
He broke his back
And this footage one day will be called "Broken Back Mountain".
Em menos de 02min ele já estava na ambulância, parabéns a todos os envolvidos no resgate
I’m not surprised he fractured a vertebra.
Did he suffer any cord injury?
Hope he does not spend the rest of his life with chronic back pain now. An injury that will haunt you for the rest of your days.
well he was a bit unsure..faded a bit then made his move but way too late..surfing a huge wave backside is always tricky..but really he got off from the ski in the wrong place and couldn't charge out of it..and really got blown up by the wave..the jet ski driver was not sure what to do either…lucky cotton is not paralysed..this wave is not for intermediates..double black diamond..plus he had some bad luck..then maybe good luck. he lived.
is he still alive? In hospital? Nazare is no sport – sorry, so many people look that worldwide…nazare the name for the biggest waves in the world…nazare maybe not a place for surfing? Hope he will survive…good luck Andrew!!!
Andrew incrível sua disposição, boa recuperação para você
wow tossed like a toy!!!!!
I feel so bad for him!!!!!
I don't know about surfing. What did he bounce out of the water at the moment the wave fall??
I met him surfing in Cornwall
Why do all jet ski drivers at Nazare suck? He didn't even give him a hand and then tried to break through way to big of a wave when he could of just gone to the beach. These drivers keep almost killing people first Maya Gabeira and now this. Smh
Insaaane!!! At First, it Looks like Cotty survived the wipeout without any Injuries – he's Even able to fight the 2nd Monster, Swim and grab the jet-ski's Safetypad!!! It seems to me, that sth. went terrible wrong while both went straight into the 3rd whitewater wall – Imagine Driving your car with 50km/h into a Moving object – impact Zone Kills it..
we all witnessed a human being suriving mother earth's great power!!! See what we are capable of – if you train, focus and give more then 100% in Things you do!! He wasn't lucky, he was prepared to surive this situation – all the best and speedy recovery! GOAT
like watching keystone kops in the surf..
Lucky to stay alive… Congrats to the rescuers!
surreal, how can a person can survive things like this?
an ill timed fade on a 100 foot of face. a subsequent 100 foot bounce. Capsizing jet skis. this has everything.
he's coming down the face of this monster not knowing where to go apparently , at one point he seems to want to veer left , then he changes his mind and keeps going straight which is the last thing you wanna do at a place like this , and then the inevitable , the whole thing dumps on him , a mystery how he didn't get killed.
Talk is cheap , of course , but to me he looks like a kook being towed by a jet ski…
The big wave coughed him out like a cat does with a fur ball.
