Biggest Surf In History of Pipe Masters

According to local media and event organizers 12/8/11 had the largest surf in the history of a Pipe Masters opening day.

Yeah that is deceiving for us average non surfer 8 foot is heavy there, 6 is ideal,ya,I see the wave nicely splits in to directions and stay to get her,one guy went to the left….small but a ton of power,remember that sound from castaway,very ominous for those who never heard it but loud for sure.I guess I'm learning pipe areas is what happens when big swell hits a shallow shelf,no?

This is not the biggest pipe masters.there were 2 in the 80's that was on the edge of close out.

Video would be more interesting with a little dialogue, set the stage, give conditions, talk about pipeline, not much just a little, great videos though!

Nah. 1977 it was tubing at 40'. As it walled up on the takeoff the water was sucked off the rocks and coral. So if you didn't stay on the wall you were dead. And one Hawaian guy did just that. They never found his body. Just ask Jerry Lopez.

not anywhere near the biggest pipe I pipe masters history. How bout '83 the year Michael Ho won. way bigger for the trials and the main event. Plus the swell in this video was sloppy. ' 83 was super clean in the trials and Doug Warren gave lessons. then in the main event Michael Ho gave severe lessons with a cast on his hand, and won every heat all the way to winning the whole event.

I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO Watch Derek Ho win pipe and become first Hawaiian to win the world championship…Larry Rios surfed better but they were all amazing. 1994 I believe
One thing u don't realize is how LOUD Pipe is when it's pumping. I mean REAL loud.
My claim to fame, I got pounded in Waimea Bay shore break…freakn nasty. 😉
