French Polynesia's deadly wave is the venue for fearless surfers in the Paris Olympics

The surfing portion of the Paris Olympics will be held at Teahupo’o reef pass on Tahiti in French Polynesia. Teahupo’o has a fascinating—if brutal—history. The wave there is one of the deadliest in the world as you’ll see in this short video I shot last year. Forty-eight surfers will compete. This is the farthest away a medal competition has been staged from a host city.
