It can be a challenge to travel with kite surfing gear at the best of times. We’re heading off to Mauritius for a couple of weeks and although Mauritius Airlines generously offer 2 x 23kg checked bags per person they’re still strict on the bag dimensions. In this case, I opted to rather make use of two ‘normal’ travel bags which still fits the maximum dimensions. In them I managed to squeeze 4 x kites (plus bags), 3 x bars, 2 x harnesses, 1 x kite pump, 2 x wetsuits (shorties), 2 sets of booties, 2 x rash vests, surf hats, first aid kit, beach towels, foot straps and fins of the boards and some spare parts and tools. They came in at around 21kg each in the end.
The board box dimensions add up to 200cm and should be allowed as part of normal luggage allowance.
Air Mauritius states:
“Surf, Kitesurf, Bodysurf, Windsurf boards, Longboards**** If dimensions (length + width + height) of equipment are less than or equal to 200 cms and its weight is under 23 kgs for economy class or 32kg for business class, the equipment is considered as part of the passenger baggage and no charge applies if the surf equipment is within the passenger’s baggage entitlement.
