This was the only way you could get surfing into the Olympics. Whether you agree with wave pools or not you got to give props to King Kelly!

Aladin Fox says:

Great, every surfer here = one less in the line up!
One way they could improve this wave is by having hydraulicaly movable features to imitate reefs that could be shifted randomly which would provide an unpredictable element much like the ocean, though I guess Mr Slater would have to shell out a few extra million $ to provide that kind of option.
On the whole I think it's great , though not sure how ecologically viable it is, weighing up the environmental damage of all the heavy construction and machinery etc, but hell, nobody thinks twice about flying or driving distances to get to a favorite surf spot. Well I do but I still do it.?.

Paul Barrett - Alexander Technique says:

I prefer Alexander Technique

Sean Callahan says:

I love how people don't even get the irony of posting their couch-surfer opinion when Gerry Lopez has already spoken. Look at the giant smile on Sphanie Gilmore's face and realize that you'll never salt the stoke on real surfers, no matter how hard you try. This augments our beautiful way of life.

shooter7a says:

Many surfers spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars over their lifetimes travelling the world to find a wave like this. Yet when they find the wave in a pool in cow country, they turn around and ridicule it because it is not "real surfing". LOL….

Hineskitt Velvett says:

Maybe for something like the Olympics where consistency would help the judging, but if this is the future of competitive Surfing then that's pretty fucking sad.

motoz30 says:

if surfing is going to continue to be judged & scored to determine a "winner" the wave pool format gives surfers the most level playing field. i get the same perfect wave you do. no swell, wind, tide variation(s) from heat to heat, just that same perfect wave over & over. i dig it.

Kalem Hall says:

Wowza! Bring this to NZ already. It looks like the winds are the one thing that can't be controlled by man… at one point it looked like the wave was cross shore.

Hobart Jones says:

One of the World's best athletes and all around good guys . . . <*(((>{

Surf Kirra 1985 says:

# the difference between true waves and false waves
# is that one you know the energy GOD and the other not
# words from the best surfer in the universe

Andrew H says:

Rumor is that a Japanese film/production crew was on site. ——Surfing will be in the Olympics in Japan, what are the chances that's just a coincidence? This pool must be under serious consideration for inclusion into the Olympics.

mxamiss5 says:

That's amazing but make this the first and last time this is done. That's not what surfing is about

Element Studios says:

For anyone worried it about it 'damaging our sport' – WTF are you on about? Are the existence of these pools going to stop you driving to your local/road trip and paddling out? If anything these pools will thin the crowds? I can't see a possible downside?

TrueBag PipeRock says:

will lead to more events and more great footage. Surfers, they just never stopped innovating. Surfers never stopped evolving. They keep coming up with great new things.

TrueBag PipeRock says:

I think it's great. very progressive. More improvements suggested in comments section already. Mix is important, and I look at this as an addition, not a substitution.

Radnally says:

What will they charge to ride this? $10/wave?

Choco says:

Whats the best tide ?

Dylan Mohr says:

As rad as that pool is, I really hope it does not become the future of our sport. It destroys the whole purpose of surfing; being in the ocean. I love Kelly and he made a super dope toy but the wsl needs to stay in places like tahiti and North shore and orange coast and trestles, not in a pool.

Edited for spelling, put wls instead of wsl

Dingo Capo says:

where does energy come from cole or oil, if its electricity?????

726brendan says:

An all brazzo final?! No surprises there. If this is the future of surfing Brazil will hold the the title for years as they mostly win comps under 4ft

Daniel Marcoulis says:

Can't wait for France when they start surfing an actual wave again.

Mickey McFinnigan says:

I say Olympic event coming soon !

AGATH0R says:

Its kinda cool and looks fun to try, but gay as shit compared to real surfing, kinda lame imo
