Lowers May 2 2017

Hear that? The cobblestones are calling after Lower Trestles delivered this week, as Southern juice put clean walls on tap for Orange County’s high-performance break. And lucky day for you: we’ve exhausted our supply of shark puns for a while, meaning you can watch guys like Cam Richards, Jordy Smith, and Tanner Gudauskas rip apart Lowers without mention of crowds (re: skittish), fins (re: tossing them up), breaches (re: into the flats), etc. Press play and watch the boys go to work during a newsworthy start to May.

Near Death Wipeouts, Biggest Waves in the world, Nazare, Portugal

Compilation of massive surfing wipeouts on the Biggest waves in the world at Nazare Portugal. The waves at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, are famed for being among the largest in the world.

one of the largest swells in recent memory hit Nazaré, off Portugal’s majestic coast. It attracted big-wave surfers from around the world, including two of the most admired, Carlos Burle and Maya Gabeira. Carlos surfed what many believe to be the largest wave ever surfed, while Maya nearly drowned as she charged what could have been the largest wave ever surfed by a woman.

Most surfing wipeouts are hardly extraordinary, or even dangerous. Nine times out of ten, a wipeout is more akin to launching a flying squirrel off the diving board than, say, plunging backwards from the coping of an eight foot half-pipe while skateboarding. After all, it’s only water, right?

Let’s not forget about the one time out of ten. It’s the terrifying moment that leaves us wondering how we ever got talked into this surfing thing in the first place, and although it is indeed rare, it’s also unavoidable. Going face-first into the reef, taking a 10-wave set on the head, getting rag-dolled beneath a malevolent closeout – these are a surfer’s true test of strength, skill, and will-power. Biggest waves ever surfed. riding giants, full movie, rip fallen surfers.

In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resides in Hawai’i, surfed a record-breaking giant wave: 78 feet (23.8 m) from trough to crest, at Nazaré. On 28 January 2013, McNamara returned to the spot and successfully surfed a wave that appeared even larger, but is awaiting an official measurement. Then, on October 28, 2013, Carlos Burle surfed another wave that is currently being scrutinized as possibly the largest wave ever ridden. On that same day, female big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira experienced a near-death wipeout, but was rescued after losing consciousness. Such very high breaking waves form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming swell waves which tends to make the waves much larger. In August 2012, a freak wave killed a 5 year old British girl and her grandfather walking along Salgado Beach.

The biggest wave ever surfed

Brave or reckless? A group of thrill-seeking surfers plunged into raging waters during one of the biggest storms to hit Europe in recent times — one of them thinks he might have broken the record for riding the biggest wave, while another is recovering in hospital after taking “the hardest beating by man or woman anywhere in the ocean.”

Praia do Norte, at the Portuguese town of Nazare, is renowned for its huge swells — and Monday brought more with the weather that caused havoc across the continent, killing at least 13 people.

Carlos Burle caught one of these, estimated to be around 100 feet high, not long after helping to haul his fellow Brazilian Maya Gabeira out of the pummeling surf after she was knocked unconscious.

Gabeira, one of the world’s leading female big-wave surfers, was taken to hospital and escaped with just a broken ankle, while Burle is hoping to have his feat ratified as a Guinness World Record.
