Weather reports announced a storm system in Oceania that would displace a strong swell that would hit Chile, Peru and Mexico. Big wave surfers Gabriel Villarán, Ramon Navarro, and Greg Long were on alert, eager for good surf after a particularly poor season, due to the El Niño phenomenon that extended the warm temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere. Watch their big wave journey through Pichilemu (Chile), Pico Alto (Lima) and Puerto Escondido (México).

Puerto Escondido has been on fire this month with nonstop swell and clean conditions. Surfline called this swell MayDays at Puerto Escondido. There were some sets pushing the Twenty Foot Plus scale.

Nathan Florence flew in for the swell and had one of the biggest wipeouts we’ve ever seen at Playa Zicatela. May 17, 2023, seemed to be larger than anticipated and offered XXL peaks, barrels, and pristine offshore winds.
