Get ready for what seems to be the biggest wave ever surfed. As high as 100 feet, and the conquering hero is a 45-year-old man in a young athlete’s game.
Yep, that tiny dot is Garrett McNamara. Dwarfed by probably the biggest wave ever surfed by man.
I just reached him in Portugal. Can you explain to the likes of us what it feels like on that moment in this wave?
“Oh, you are just going so fast and it really, really similar to snowboarding down a giant mountain and you’re just chattering and just flying down this bumpy, bumpy mountain. Your brain’s getting rattled. Your whole body is getting rattled.”
At the end of the ride, he was also nearly smashed onto the rocks.
“I can honestly say survival chances were very, very slim.”
And McNamara, 45-year old Hawaiian, lucky to be living legend, might just have shattered his own world record. A little over 77 feet, set in 2011, also right here off the rugged coast of Portugal. Surfing at nearly 60 miles per hour, the ride took less than 30 seconds. Potential record waves are measured using a surfer crouched on a board for scale.

Massive Surfing Wipeouts – Nazare

Compilation of massive surfing wipeouts on the Biggest waves in the world at Nazare Portugal. The waves at Praia do Norte, Nazaré, are famed for being among the largest in the world.

one of the largest swells in recent memory hit Nazaré, off Portugal’s majestic coast. It attracted big-wave surfers from around the world, including two of the most admired, Carlos Burle and Maya Gabeira. Carlos surfed what many believe to be the largest wave ever surfed, while Maya nearly drowned as she charged what could have been the largest wave ever surfed by a woman.

Most surfing wipeouts are hardly extraordinary, or even dangerous. Nine times out of ten, a wipeout is more akin to launching a flying squirrel off the diving board than, say, plunging backwards from the coping of an eight foot half-pipe while skateboarding. After all, it’s only water, right?

Let’s not forget about the one time out of ten. It’s the terrifying moment that leaves us wondering how we ever got talked into this surfing thing in the first place, and although it is indeed rare, it’s also unavoidable. Going face-first into the reef, taking a 10-wave set on the head, getting rag-dolled beneath a malevolent closeout – these are a surfer’s true test of strength, skill, and will-power. Biggest waves ever surfed. riding giants, full movie, rip fallen surfers.

Billabong xxl wipeouts of the year 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016

In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resides in Hawai’i, surfed a record-breaking giant wave: 78 feet (23.8 m) from trough to crest, at Nazaré. On 28 January 2013, McNamara returned to the spot and successfully surfed a wave that appeared even larger, but is awaiting an official measurement. Then, on October 28, 2013, Carlos Burle surfed another wave that is currently being scrutinized as possibly the largest wave ever ridden. On that same day, female big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira experienced a near-death wipeout, but was rescued after losing consciousness. Such very high breaking waves form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming swell waves which tends to make the waves much larger. In August 2012, a freak wave killed a 5 year old British girl and her grandfather walking along Salgado Beach.
