Making rounds in social media is a photo of a guy bearing a familiar family name, wearing a lip ring and sporting a lean physique. No, he is not a rock star paid for a gig in a campaign sortie but he may as well pass as one. He is Sebastian Duterte, 28, affectionately nicknamed “Baste”, the 3rd child of presidentiable and Davao city mayor Rodrigo Duterte who is labeled “the Punisher” for his zero tolerance policy against crime.

This rugged looking guy exudes an easy-going and chill vibe, but when he assumes the stage to campaign for his father before a raging crowd, he becomes pensive. There is confidence in the way he speaks but more importantly, there is a stamp of authenticity in his delivery, something which is difficult to come by in campaign speeches. If he is not delivering a speech before a crowd, he is entertaining the latter by serenading them with rock songs.

Epic Surf News Week of May 22nd, 2016 – Kelly Slater Wave Pool, Julian Wilson, and Malia Manuel

Hello and Thank you for joining Pro Surf Blog for this Epic Surf News Update for May 2016.
Surfing News for 5/22/2016 through 5/28/2016

I woke up on the wrong-side of the bed May 24th. My crusty eyes tried to focus in on a video of a non-surfing media host dropping into Kelly Slater’s wavepool. I don’t keep track of hollywood media personalities very well but apparently this chick, Natalie Morales, is one of the hosts of the “Today Show”. I am not gonna comment much more on this other than “Slater, I get it but it hurts for locals everywhere that put-in-work.

Then I found out Michel Bourez got his chance to demo the pool and felt a bit better. Check out his mug with stoke written all over it.

Catching whiplash from all of the information coming at me, It was surfline that focused in on the written word.
Here is what we learned:
World Surf League is buying KS WaveCo for an undisclosed sum
Kierren Perrow and Jesse Miley-Dyer are two people that have already tested the pool
Adam Fincham is the scientist that worked with Kelly Slater to invent this machine
The wave type is known as soliton which is like a groundswell. Slopes, ledges, timing, and bottom contours are additional aspects that complete the final product
The Leemore wave pool is the prototype, and it is a private test facility. It’s not for rent.

Getting back to the real ocean on May 27th when we reshared a video from Julian WIlson’s facebook page. “Pop it like it’s hot” J-Dub.

From there we jumped into competition headlines on May 28th with the Women’s Fiji Pro. The waves were a medium sized enticement and the action was world class. Check out Malia Manuel going vertical and following through by bringing her tail all the way around in her round-1 heat.
