Surfing America Prime – Event #5 Upper Trestles

The waves weren’t what we were hoping for at Uppers, which had been firing the last couple of swells. It was still probably one of the best spots in SoCal last weekend, with clean 1 — 3 foot rights running down the cobblestone point. The weather was beautiful and the wind stayed down except for the last couple of hours on Saturday. The kids made the most of it firing off some impressive performances despite the diminutive surf.

In Boys U14, Ventura’s Eithan Osborne, no stranger to right hand points, managed to find some nuggets and the win. Eithan sealed his Season Championship Title with this win.

In Girls U16, Santa Cruz’s Autumn Hays made her first finals appearance since the first event of the season, and this time made sure she made the most of the opportunity and took her first win in the Prime series. Kirra Pinkerton from San Clemente has just missed the finals on two occasions but used her small size to her advantage in the small surf and took 2nd in her first Prime final.

In Boys U16, the boys were scrapping all weekend. Uppers is Kei Kobayashi’s turf and he wanted the win, but in the end Griffin Colapinto held him off by a slim .17 point margin. Griffin also went on to hold off big boy, Jake Davis, who surfed impressively in the small conditions, to also win the Boys U18 division. Kirk Weissinger from Seal Beach and Jason Belgau from San Diego were ripping all weekend and rounded out the final in their first Prime podium finish in 3rd and 4th respectively.

In Girls U18, Steffi Kerson found a rare left and was able to score some big points in the against the grain wave. She took first for the second time in a row. ASP Sunset Beach Junior Pro winner Meah Collins was 2nd, followed by Malia Osterkamp from San Clemente. Ashley Held from Santa Cruz, took 4th repeating her finish from the Surfing America Prime Santa Cruz last month.

The Prime Series goes East next month to New Smyna Beach Inlet March 8 & 9, followed by Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, NC, May 3 & 4, and then finishing off at Oceanside Harbor, North Jetty, May 31 — June 1.
