Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

If the comments are anything to by by, this vid seems to be bringing in a lot of non-surfers. Jaws is a big wave surf spot, nothing to do with a shark. If we posted a vid of a surfing shark, we’d call it just that. Not Jaws. The above would be a silly title for a surfing shark vid.

We’re barely a few weeks into a fresh decade and we may have seen the session of the year so far. On Thursday, Jaws erupted as a huge swell ripped into the Maui coastline – with a full cast of AAA chargers on hand to wrangle those double-decker bus-sized kegs.

And, you’ve probably seen on our social media Billy Kemper’s ‘ride of his life’. A heaving, hollow tube that was so neatly and perfectly threaded, that its tendrils will take root in the course of Jaws’ surfing history. It was that damn good.

But there were so many more afficiandos in the mix too. Kai Lenny (who we hear bagged potential wave of the year yesterday after this session went down – more on that later), Adriano DeSouza, Tyler Larronde and more.

Let’s break down the session here; on Thursday, when this session went down, a NW swell pulse capped out at 12.5ft@16 seconds with light wind, creating what you see here. Big wave surfers Jamie Mitchell and Jojo Roper meet up with triathlete/big wave surfer Clint Kimmins to take on Nazare both in paddle and tow. This edit takes in 3 days when the WSL decide to run a teams tow-in event where Jamie Mitchell is invited. All’s goes better than planned until the last 4 minutes of the event. Thanks Jamie, Clint, Jojo & Rafael for making this real!

–Season 2 : Episode 49–
Hurricane Teddy combined with a Nor’Easter to provide the biggest swell to hit Cape Hatteras since Winter Storm Riley in March 2018. And as the swell began to die, there was a window of said 12-15ft barrels, and a few bigger sets pushing near 20ft! One of the top biggest barreling days I’ve ever seen in the OBX.

And then on Day 2 we were graced with an all day wave feast, from dawn till dusk. What a blessing of surf after getting hammered for 5 days with the road closed and washed out.
