A monster lurks just off the coast of Northern California. Known as “Mavericks,” this surf break north of Half Moon Bay generates some of the biggest waves in the world, and draws the big wave surfers that live for them. But what makes these waves so big?

KQED’s QUEST talks with scientists who are getting to the bottom of it and the big wave surfers willing to take their lives in their hands for the ultimate thrill ride.

Previous moments of a GIANT swell in Nazaré, the tension is felt in the air. This is how the chargers prepare to surf the biggest wave in the world. From the Redbull shed, in the Nazaré Harbor Port, we witness all the preparation in a day of great sea, where the surfers of big waves, begin to feel the adrenaline of an epic swell.
