2019 Jaws Big Wave Championships | Highlights

Watch the best waves of the 2019 Jaws Big Wave Championships, held in 30-to-50-foot waves at Peahi, in Maui, Hawaii.

The winners of the 2019 Jaws Big Wave Championships are Billy Kemper and Paige Alms.

The Maui natives swept the event for a second time in their respective careers with Alms earning a historic third victory and Kemper an unprecedented fourth Jaws Challenge title.

The ocean came to life after a slow 20-minute start that Alms was able to scratch into and drop down the critical face before being swallowed by a mountain of white water.

The 2016 and 2017 Jaws Challenge champion sustained a hamstring injury in the process but grabbed a backup jersey and returned to the lineup.

“It’s the ultimate feeling being on a giant wave. It’s when I feel the most alive, and so it’s the double-edged sword,” expressed Alms.

“You’re putting your body and life on the line to ride these waves, but when you successfully ride one, nothing beats it.”

Fellow Maui native and one of the crowd favorites Annie Reickert made her incredible Big Wave debut at just age 18 and stunned those in attendance to earn a third-place finish.

Runner-up Felicity Palmateer threw herself over the ledge into death-defying drops to put on a showcase throughout her performances.

The men’s side also proved historic as Kemper claimed an unprecedented fourth victory, going back-to-back once more, at his home break of Peahi – winning the event in 2015, 2016, and 2018 previously.

The 29-year-old put on a clinic performance at the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons and carried that momentum into a dominant performance with the event’s highest heat total, a 21.26 (out of a possible 30), in the final to defend his title.

Kemper locked into a massive barrel, which he was able to find an exit from to earn a 7.83.

“I did what I wanted to do, and this was just my day. I told myself when I went out there in this final, there’s no way I was coming home with second place,” concluded Kemper.

Surfing Jaws on a soft top (wavestorm)

Although Jaws is not a place to be messing around, I just wanted to see if it was possible to catch a wave on a wavestorm. You never know until you go.

MASSIVE Waves INSIDE Sydney Harbour! Swell Of The Decade!

In this vlog I chased down a novelty surf inside Sydney Harbour thanks to a monstrous swell hitting the east coast of Australia.

Deadman’s came to life (the first couple minutes of this clip) and so did a special little point break perfect for a foamie sesh with loads of frothing party wave grommets.

Official Holding Period for Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge pres. by Jogos Santa Casa Now Open

Nazaré, Portugal (Monday, November 2, 2020) – The world’s best big wave surfers are back on call as the holding period for the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge pres. by Jogos Santa Casa officially opened today.

The broadcast-only competition will host 18 competitors, making up 10 teams for the one-day event. Each team will compete in two 50-minute heats, alternating between surfing and driving the team’s jet ski.

Event officials will monitor swell-producing storms, watching for the precise conditions that will produce waves in the competition range. Once the call is made by the event officials, competitors will have 72-hours notice to be ready to compete.

WSL officials have collaborated extensively with public health officials, medical experts, as well as local and state officials, to create a thorough plan to ensure the health and safety of participants, staff, and the surrounding community. This event will be strictly executed to follow the WSL’s health and safety procedures, which were developed based on guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, and emerging best practices established by other sports leagues and broadcast-only live sports events. These procedures include testing for athletes and essential staff, strict social distancing measures, temperature checks, and minimal personnel on-site.

The headland and access to the fort will also be closed to the public to avoid crowds gathering on the cliffs when the competition is called on.

The Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge presented by Jogos Santa Casa will stream LIVE on WorldSurfLeague. com, the WSL app, and Portugal broadcast partner Fuel TV.
