Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

Despite its guts-n-glory high stakes visual appeal, big wave surfing has long struggled to receive the same backing and support as traditional competitive surfing. And the WOMEN of big wave surfing — despite riding the same conditions — have been almost entirely marginalized and under-appreciated. Until now.

What changed? Well, about five years back, a small group of dedicated big-wave charging females set out to demand equality in their sport. San Francisco-based filmmaker/journalist Sachi Cunningham was there every step of the way, documenting the victories and wipeouts for her upcoming film: “SheChange.”

Here, Cunningham shares some of the most significant moments from their shared journey and with some wonderful insights into the upcoming film.

Welcome to another longboard surf video from Encinitas in California, and Maui Hawaii. My gorgeous wifey (MY Mermaid) and I Sean (Polar) took the GoPro to Swami’s in California and compared it to Maui in Lahaina surfing, and the beaches.

Comparing both beaches wow it’s really tough they both had clear clean waves, the water was warm and both long rides as well! You couldn’t go wrong with either spot to surf. The vibes at Swami’s was amazing every one is so chill and friendly. The vibes in Maui are the exactly the same some localism but not very much where we were surfing at. Usually longboard surfers are more friendlier. If you ever go to either of these spots you will have a great time and the vibes and beaches are excellent! Waking up in my tent and paddling out to 50ft Jaws, I recall one of the most violent and deepest hold downs of my career.

This was filmed during the making of “Ground Swell: The Other Side of Fear” and “Over the Edge”.

One of my favourite trips anywhere this year. I ventured back to my home state of South Australia with legendary big wave & slab hunter Justin ‘Jughead’ Allport plus young up & coming surfer Hughie Vaughan. We head 1000 Kilometres into the desert to that super dangerous slab wave that almost took Dylan Longbottom’s life last year. This wave is mostly a tow wave as it moves so fast. BUT you do get surfers like Russell Bierke, Kael Walsh & Harry Bryant that want to challenge themselves to paddle this wave but as you’ll see it’s not easy. This adventure also features Dylan Robertson & Kipp Caddy and just wait till you see the POV vision from Kipp. Enjoy this adventure..
