Portugal: Surfers catch massive waves in Nazare after hurricane Episilon stirs up the Atlantic

Surfers flocked to the popular surfing destination of Nazare’s ‘Praia do Norte’on Thursday, as a historic swell derived from the remnants of hurricane Epsilon hit the coastline.

Fans and surfers headed to the hills and were seen looking on as surfers descended down the colossal waves.

“Today the waves were like 5 meters with 20 seconds without wind and sunny. Especially, when it gets that big, it’s kind of stormy and windy. And this time it’s pretty clean and no wind and sunny. That’s why so many people showed up to watch this show,” an attendee said.

The famous surfing spot, located in the central coast of Portugal, is home to the biggest surfable waves on the planet. Brazilian surfer Ricardo Koxa set a world record for the biggest wave ever surfed in 2017 by overcoming an impressive 24 metre (80 foot) wave in Nazare.

BIGGEST NAZARÉ EVER EVERR!!!! | VON FROTH EP 17

I always thought that the day would come where we would see a huge huge swell with clean offshore winds.
Since I remember looking at weather and storm maps Ive never ever seen a forecast of conditions like this and Mother Nature delivered some of the craziest cleanest waves ever seen at Nazaré.
A day for the history books, swells like this happen very few times in a lifetime.

So happy to witness this day and see everyone back to shore safe.

Surfer Conor Maguire catches 'Ireland's biggest wave'

Surfer Conor Maguire has claimed what may be Ireland’s largest ever swell it was almost on his doorstep at Mullaghmore in County Sligo.

The area, which generally produces waves of 6-9 metres (20-30ft) in height, was hit by a rare coincidence of conditions: the swell from Hurricane Epsilon on top of a mid-Atlantic depression which produced waves breaking almost a mile out and touching, perhaps, 18 metres in height.

After asking the permission of the local council due to Covid restrictions and in coordination with the RNLI, it was deemed appropriate for Maguire and his support team – including five jetskis for safety – to ride.

‘Originally when I saw the swell on the charts, I was like: ‘Oh fuck, of course it would happen during lockdown,’’ Maguire told the surfing website Magic Seaweed of his potentially record breaking wave, adding that ‘my main concern was not to offend anyone or put pressure on the hospital system’.

On the wave itself, the Maguire said, ‘it was smooth, man. I felt like butter or something … I just kind of stood there [laughs]. But it ended up catching up with me in the end’
