Ahmed Erraji, better known by the pseudonym @hijo_del_mar on Instagram, has been bodysurfing since the age of 7. Now living in the Canaries, this Moroccan regularly attacks waves that many thought impossible to take in bodysurfing. And yet …
While all of Europe had their eyes riveted last week on Belharra or Nazaré, he preferred to bodysurf a wave of very good size near Lanzarote. Wave also affected by Hurricane Epsilon last week. Without a board and only armed with a pair of fins, Ahmed set out for a memorable ride.
Ahmed say,
“A swell of this magnitude usually only appears here once every 4 or 5 years. I live in front of the sea, and at night I have felt the power and impact of the storm. opened the window at 7 am and the sound of power and freedom and silence was the vision that took root in my brain, it was definitely the call.
I jumped out of the harbor and swam 1 km offshore facing all the intimidating elements (currents, slabs, rocks …). When I reached the peak, I saw a couple of shearwaters (Editor’s note: sea birds) perched on the water. I approached them because I thought they always chose quiet places to rest. But suddenly they spread their wings and flew away. It was Mother Nature’s way of telling me that something huge was going to happen. You can see the magic scene that I saw on video “.
