The Science Behind Surfing At Shipstern Bluff

The Southern Hemisphere’s most notorious surfing slab is hosting this year’s Red Bull Cape Fear, so watch this video to get acquainted with how Tasmania’s Shipstern Bluff keeps on motoring.

After running one of the craziest surfing events the world has ever seen in 2016, Mark Mathews and his crew decided to ramp things up further for the latest instalment of Red Bull Cape Fear. After tackling Cape Solander in Sydney, Australia, in the midst of a 50-year-storm last time around, this time the field of invited stars and local talent will be squaring off at Shipstern Bluff off the coast of the Australian island state of Tasmania.
The ’Stern’ is a wave like no other. From the infamous step to the cliffs where it breaks and the cold water and rogue wildlife, there’s no shortage of vicious variables at the Southern Hemisphere’s most famous slab.

The Science of Shipstern Bluff | Tasmania's Big Wave Surfing Break

Shipstern Bluff is regarded as one of the wildest and most dangerous surf locations, thanks to waves of up to 30 feet (10 meters), equivalent to a four-story building.

One of the most challenging surf breaks in the world, Shipstern Bluff was first surfed in the early 2000s with triple-overhead waves up to 20 feet (6 meters) commonplace.

The most notable characteristic of “Shippies” is when a wave within a wave is created due to the shape of the reef bottom, causing several steps to emerge.

The rest of the wave is a fast-paced barrel of up to 50 km/h – the weight in volume of water equivalent to 15 semi-trailers – making it a violent hold down.

Shipstern Bluff is also welcoming to sea life, such as seals, orcas, and great white sharks with several sightings over the years, adding to the fear factor of this chilling coastline.

“Surfing a wave like Shipstern Bluff gives a sense of satisfaction and relief,” says three-time world champion, Mick Fanning.

Maya Gabeira Breaks Guinness World Record for the Largest Wave By a Woman | 73.5 Feet at Nazaré

Watch Maya Gabeira set a new Guinness World Record for the biggest wave ever ridden by a female surfer.

The Brazilian surfer won “XXL Biggest Wave” at the 2020 Red Bull Big Wave Awards with a spectacular ride on a 73.5-foot (22.4 meters) wave at Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, Portugal.

The World Surf League decided that all data regarding potential world record waves should be reviewed by an independent scientific team.

The team included members from the WaveCo Science team, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the University of Southern California, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.

The analysis was based on video and photo imagery, camera locations, camera lens parameters, and environmental conditions, including tides, sunlight, and wave set-up.

Collinearity equations were used to transform the image coordinates into real-world coordinates based on estimates of the geometric parameters, including the height of the cliff at Nazaré.

In addition, fixed reference points in the imagery, including the surfers’ heights, surfboard and jet ski dimensions, and estimated crouching heights, were utilized in the scientific calculations.

Maya Gabeira’s world record wave was surfed on February 11, 2020, at Praia do Norte, in Nazaré, Portugal.

She improved her previous mark set at 68 feet (20.72 meters).
