Briton Tom Butler believes he may have broken the world record for surfing the biggest ever wave after successfully riding a huge swell at Nazaré in Portugal on 14 December.
The 29-year-old says the wave was estimated to be more than 100ft tall. The current official record is 80ft, which was set last year by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa also at Nazaré.
Butler said surfing the wave was like ‘running away from a raging bull’. It is likely he will have to wait for the WSL Big Wave Awards in April 2019 for official confirmation on whether he broke the world record.
Surfing and skateboarding receive huge Olympic boost from UK Sport
A British surfer ‘breaks the world record for riding the biggest wave’, in a yet-to-be-confirmed surfing accomplishment filmed in Nazare, Portugal.
Tom Butler took on a huge swell at Nazaré in Portugal on Friday (December 14) estimated to be more than 100ft tall (30m).
Onlookers and surfing experts have said he had beaten the previous record of 80ft – set in November 2017 by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa.
The record is unlikely to be confirmed until WSL Big Wave Awards, which take place in April 2019.
Video seen here shows Butler riding the monster wave in real-time, followed by a slow-motion replay at half-speed.
Butler was towed into his wave by German big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner. Also on his team was Maya Gabeira, the woman who holds the record for riding the biggest wave.
