This is the moment a Brit claims to have sailed into history – by breaking the record for surfing the biggest WAVE. Daredevil Tom Butler, 29, took on a huge swell at The Nazaré in Portugal – estimated to be more than 100ft tall (30m). He says onlookers and surfing experts are confident he had beaten the previous record of 80ft – set earlier this year by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa. Tom of Newquay, Cornwall, said surfing the wave was like ”running away from a raging bull”.
Reblogged 6 years ago from www.youtube.comBritish Big Wave Surfer Tom Butler, 29 years old, rode a spectacular monster wave in Portugal’s Nazaré during the recent giant swell of December 14th, as footage continues to emerge. Locals described this wave as the biggest “bomb” of the day in what was the biggest swell of the season.
English press is calling this the new world record, onlookers and some surfing experts have said he had beaten the previous record of 80ft – set in November 2017 by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa. The record is unlikely to be confirmed until WSL Big Wave Awards, which take place in April 2019.
Pedro Miranda, the Filmaker who captured this footage said on a statement to the press: “this is tricky, Tommy is a very tall guy, measuring 6ft 2inch any wave ridden by him will always look way smaller than it really is, not calling this a world record because I don’t like to go into speculation, but whatever measure you think it is, the wave will be way bigger after analysed by the WSL experts” (…) “just put there any other (smaller) guy, with a few inches of diference the wave would look way bigger” (…) “This wave will most likely win the WSL Big Wave Awards this season, still a lot of Winter ahead but the bar has been set high by Tommy, really glad for him since he is one of the most experienced Big Wave riders I know and he totally deserves it!”
Tom Butler was teaming up with German Big Wave Surfer Sebastian Steudtner who towed him into this monster wave, also on his team was Brazilian Record Holder Maya Gabeira that just rode the Biggest Wave ever ridden by a Women during last season.
Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous worldwide for huge waves in 2011, when Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a world-record for the largest wave ever surfed at 78-foot at the time, in 2017 that record was broken by Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa, setting the bar at 80-foot.

This raw footage shows Brazilian Big Wave Surfer, Thiago Jacaré (35 ys old), charging into the first wave of a big set in Nazaré during yesterday’s monster swell. Thiago manages to ride the wave until a bump makes him fall of his board and he gets immediately swallowed by a wall of white water, suffering an extensive hold down before resurfacing just in time to catch a quick breath, just before the next wave impact. His team mate, Big Wave Surfer David Langer, first attempts to rescue him with his jetski, but there’s no window of opportunity during the next waves of the set.
Thiago ends up taking with a total of 5 waves on the head (including the first wave) before he gets rescued by German Big Wave Surfer Sebastian Steudtner, in a moment where all teams in the water were requested to help with this rescue.
Thiago was safely taken to the beach, where a paramedic team was already expecting him with full support. Thiago managed to survive this incident without a scratch, although he was completely exhausted when he got to the beach, and he was immobilised and taken in by an ambulance, as safety measure.
Later on that same day, Thiago gave the following statement to the filmmaker who captured this footage: “This was by far the worst wipeout of my life, I barely got the chance to breath between waves, when I got to the sand I was completely exhausted, to the point I couldn’t even move” (…) “I want to thank Sebastian Steudtner for the rescue and David Langer for the tow, I won’t ever forget this day!”.
Thiago Jacaré is an experienced Big Wave Surfer from Brazil, he worked many years as a professional lifeguard and has several rescue courses, Thiago is also involved in the organisation of Big Wave competitions in Brazil, when he is not chasing giant swells around the world.
