Biggest Wave Ever Surfed

Known by many names, including the Wall of Skulls, the iconic and sometimes deadly wave just off the coast of Teahupo’o, Tahititi is the stuff of surfing legend. And for 4 days this summer, it will be the venue for surfing events during the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

But many are worried about the coming human tsunami and the effect the Games will have on the reef break just off the coast of the island. Despite protests, a petition and desperate pleas from locals, Olympic organizers replaced a temporary wooden judging tower with a much bigger aluminum one that was drilled directly into the coral. During construction, a barge used by workers assembling the tower also damaged coral at the site.

Big swell stirred up lots of sand creating big hollow chocolate tubes all the way up until mid-tide where the swell started to fill clearing up the break and reflecting a beautiful clear blue sky. What a phenomenal day to be a surfer on the east coast! The barrels were extremely allusive to catch on video with big sets blocking the line up as the point break took full effect and rattled the washout with complete hollow barrels, no chandeliers in sight. It was a very fun sight to watch. It didn’t help that the no-see-ums were out in full force preventing me from holding my lens still for more than the length on one good wave. Seems like the best waves we have had in over a year with proper swell that was dragging tubes over the sandbars. A 6pm call did not disappoint as the tide came in just after sunset. For some surfers it was an 11-hour session in the water, and I really can’t blame them. For others it was time well spend basking on the beach as the tide came in, watching friends get their own “wave’s “of the day. Good Morning Young Groms,

I’ve got the surf trip bug! After scoring Iceland for the first time last year, I have become addicted. The year before that I got skunked at Jaws (2021). Afterward, my bank account and motivation were at an all time low. Iceland round 1 lit a fire beneath me and I worked super hard to slowly save up some money. And now my biggest goal is go surf all 7 continents by the time I am 30 years old. Today we made a huge step by putting the feet in the wax and surfing Africa for the first time! We now have North America, Europe and Africa down! South America, Oceania, Asia and Antarctica are still pending. Stay tuned because there’s more continents to surf, but the swell is here and its time to surf!
