Nazaré, Portugal is renowned for its massive waves that attract surfers from around the world. Waves can reach as high as 100 feet. The unique geographical features of Nazaré, including its deep underwater canyons (Nazaré Cayon) and the interaction of swells from the Atlantic Ocean, contribute to the formation of these gigantic waves. Surfers flock to Nazaré to challenge themselves, the best time to visit is between October and March. Unfortunately the biggest waves I saw on my trip were only 30 feet.
Wikipedia has some great statistics on Nazaré: Numerous surfing records have been set. In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara surfed a then record-breaking giant wave measuring 23.8 m (78 ft) from trough to crest, at Praia do Norte, Nazaré. On 8 November 2017 Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa broke the previous record by surfing a wave of 24.4 m (80 ft). In October 2020, German surfer Sebastian Steudtner broke this record, riding a wave which was measured at 26.2 m (86 ft).
On 18 January 2018 Brazilian big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira surfed a wave of 24.7 meters (74 feet).
On 5 January 2023 Brazilian professional surfer Márcio Freire died whilst practicing tow-in surfing.

A lot of hype on this swell so I decided to wack together the better waves from today Friday 8th December. It was not the biggest waves but the 20,000 plus spectators got to see a really good show mostly staring Sebastian Steudtner. Enjoy
PS – Excuse the specs of dust that must have got on my camera censor before shooting..

Reblogged 9 months ago from www.youtube.comIt’s pretty incredible to see how big wave surfing has evolved over the last decade. From the performance side, to safety, boards and gear — it’s all improving so quickly. I can’t wait to see where it goes in the next ten years.

A massive building swell and great weather led the way to the wild day of action, which displayed the art of tow surfing, where Lucas Chianca & Pedro Scooby’s teamwork won the day. In addition, Maya Gabeira continued to push the boundaries of Big Wave surfing. Watch as Felecity Palmateer, Ben Mondy and Carlos Burle break it all down.
