CBS 8 drone captures high surf, huge waves at Windansea Beach in La Jolla

A high-surf and a coastal flood advisory will be in effect Friday through Monday at San Diego County beaches, with large breaking waves up to 12 feet and some expected minor flooding, forecasters said.

Advisories
Both advisories will be in effect until 2 a.m. Monday and include warnings of dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, beach erosion and minor tidal overflow during morning high tides at low-lying coastal areas such as beach parking lots and walkways.

On Friday morning, the Coronado Police Department closed the boardwalk behind Hotel Del Coronado at 1500 Orange Ave. for an undetermined amount of time due to high tides. The San Diego Fire Department on Friday also closed Mission Bay Channel due to high surf until Monday, advising boaters the alternate option is San Diego Bay. SDFD added that San Diego lifeguards will be periodically advising boaters on surf conditions via VHF channel 16.

Big Wave Surfing at Rincon Point – 12-28-2023

Rincon might just be the best wave in Californiaā€¦ when itā€™s working.
The ā€œQueen of the Coastā€ straddles the border of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Everything to the north and west of the Rincon Creek is in Santa Barbara, and everything east and south is in Ventura. Although surfers from both counties will try and claim this wave as their own (and rightfully so), Rincon is traditionally considered a Santa Barbara wave.

Although Rincon isnā€™t as consistent as some of the breaks in south county Ventura, it does get its fair share of swell when compared to the point breaks that lie to the north in Santa Barbara.

Rincon defines the classic California point-break. A cobblestone rocks cover a crescent shaped bay, a creek mouth spreads sand perfectly along the bay after a winter rain, and an indicator refracts waves into the inside cove. Itā€™s a beautiful thing.

Itā€™s no wonder Rincon is a must-surf destination for Mr. Slater every winter, and the breeding ground for 3-time world-champion Tom Curren, former world tour surfer (and anti-ASP spokesman) Bobby Martinez, and brothers Connor and Parker Coffin.
