A monster lurks just off the coast of Northern California. Known as “Mavericks,” this surf break north of Half Moon Bay generates some of the biggest waves in the world, and draws the big wave surfers that live for them. But what makes these waves so big?
KQED’s QUEST talks with scientists who are getting to the bottom of it and the big wave surfers willing to take their lives in their hands for the ultimate thrill ride.

everyone here is from like 12 years ago, im here for online learning touche
The fuck is this video quality bruh?
I love these comments
I lived right above the area for about 30 years and used to walk down to the cliff above and sit there and watch them surf the wave. I went out on a friend's boat from Pillar Point when Mark Foo was missing, to help look for him (to no avail). One of the reasons Maverick (yes that's what it was called long before it was called "Mavericks") is so dangerous is because the wave breaks on a rocky area below the cliff and it can be very dangerous below the water. There have been more deaths since that time, one just before I left in 1998. I live in the mountains now, two states away, but I do miss the ocean.
Mr Carmichael Sir I think you look goofy today xx
Thanks for the classwork

Never surfed Maverick's. but surfing is clearly the best thing I've ever done.
