Hallidays Point, Australia — a 65-year-old surfer was savagely wounded by a shark at a beach in New South Wales on Friday.
David Quinlivan was surf-skiiing at Black Head Beach around 11:30 a.m. Friday when a shark knocked him from his surf-ski and mauled his leg.
Quinlivan was able to overturn his surf-ski and use it as a surf board to catch a wave back to shore. Two civlians brought him back to the beach and called for doctors to treat him.
Quinlivan suffered suffered cuts to his calf and a bite to the bone on his left ankle.
After being treated by paramedics, he was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle for further treatment.
For safety concerns, the beach was to be closed for 24 hours.
This was the first shark attack at Black Head Beach in roughly 90 years.
