Professional big wave surfer Jamie Sterling hopped on a plane with a mission to find and surf decent waves in the great lakes.
At Beaver Bay in Duluth (lake superior), Minnesota amongst freezing cold temperatures, Sterling was able to surf some remarkably big waves despite being in an actual fresh water lake.

Amazing!!@ i live in Florida I need to go here!!!!
Growing up in New England, I can’t imagine swimming in something that has waves and NOT salt water.
20 knot currents is pretty gnarly.
I live in Duluth Mn that is right on the western tip of Lake Superior. To people on the great lakes these are seas not "Lakes". But I prefer bodyboarding in the ocean it's much warmer and won't drown you
And I thought Northern California surfing was ccccoooold. Wild.
It's hard to imagine Lakes producing a wave's…
thats better than thw aurf here in miami
I love Lake Superior, what a force to be respected though. People get dragged out into the Great Lakes every year and it is mostly due to a lack of understanding how powerful they are. It’s fun to splash around when the waves are coming in a little high and hard but it’s very dangerous. People used to ocean swimming don’t anticipate how often the waves come in or how the fresh water offers less buoyancy so you sink easier as the heavy waves repeatedly beat you down and tire you out. Rip tides are common and it doesn’t take much depth to sweep you off your feet. So if you are visiting these lakes be careful, this is not the place to try your luck. Nice calm slow waves are what you want for swimming here.
I salute yall…..yall…yall yea way Tooo…Cold
Lake Superior is truly phenomenal for many reasons besides being able to surf on fresh water! Thanks to the lake you have some of the highest snowfall levels (parts of the southern shore average 525 cm) anywhere on the planet which creates some great skiing and snowshoeing. The lake also has a measurable gravitational tide although it is dwarfed by the Seiches. Winds and changes in air pressure cause the lake level to raise and fall up to 1 to 2 meters every 4 to 7 hours. Significant weather events will trigger these Seiches (imagine water sloshing back and forth in a tub) which will continue to “slosh” back and forth for several days. And then there are the meteotsunamis, which are also triggered by weather events or air pressure changes sometimes 500km away. Winds or a storm on the far end of the lake can cause a sudden surge in the water that can travel across the lake in a matter of hours and a 3 meter wave will strike an otherwise calm beach on seemingly clear sunny day from what appears to be out of nowhere. All these things (plus the surfing) makes many of us who know her personally think we really need a new word because lake somehow doesn’t do her justice.
BTW… Lake Huron is also quite spectacular in that it has actually spawned its own hurricane like storm where the warm waters fed the growth over several days. It even developed rain bands and an eyewall forming an eye several miles across… Hurricane Huron was listed in the 1996 hurricane season. And that isn’t the only thing the lake shares with the Caribbean, it also has Bahama style blue holes hundreds of feet deep that are fed by groundwater giving them a different ecology then the surrounding lake. The pictures of these holes are stunning…some of the bluest water in the world. And it’s not far from Lake Michigan’s spectacular Sleeping Bear Sand Dune rising out of the lake at 33 degrees to a height of 140 m and covering 10 sq km.
Is this pomroy
Thats for viewing only
But its a wavepool drop
Where is Jamie O’Brien?
