NAZARÉ – PORTUGAL, A BATTLE FOR THE WORLD RECORD #surf #nazaresurf #worldrecord

On February 24th, 2024, was a HISTORIC day in Nazaré, Portugal. A battle for the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed took place. Two surfers in the sea attempting to ride waves over 100 feet tall on a stormy day at Praia do Norte, in front of hundreds of people who filled the cliff to witness a day that will go down in the books.
Lucas Chumbo undoubtedly surfed waves that surpass the record already established in 2022 for the largest wave ever surfed. Now it is time to measure and officially confirm the size of the waves.

It has been over 5 years since Nazaré experienced a swell of such magnitude and under such conditions: a GIANT, STORMY, and WINDY sea with waves exceeding 100 feet.
These conditions made catching waves of this size not only a challenging task but also a VERY DANGEROUS one… a matter of life or death!

What do you think? Is there a new world record?

Estuvimos ahi.
All the best

Unreal one of them almost did a bottom turn

respect for risking your life, but being towed in vs. dropping in is not the same thing. He's a third of the way down the face and then rides it to the edge. Is this really a complete ride, like dropping in at Mavericks or Waimea on a gun down a 30+ foot face. No disrespect meant at all, but should be completely different records.

Crazy size, courageous surfers waterskiing. There is a fine line between actually surfing these waves and just outrunning them into the channel. Personally I will never count this spot for world records. It’s the size it is because it is a wedge. Besides Kai Lenny and Lucas, and maybe some others I have not yet seen, surf these waves. Everyone else is just water skiing across the face to the channel. That’s not surfing in my book. Say what you want, but almost nobody out there would/could surf waves this size if the actually broke down the line over a reef like Jaws or Cortez Bank.

Seems more like skiing than surfing. Down the wave and on the shoulder before it breaks. It’s rad but not really surfing to me.
